Moving To NYC

Author: Seth Miller

Moving to a new location requires careful planning. Although it is possible to do the packing, loading and unloading on your own, engaging a dependable mover would save a lot of time and effort, and may even prove to be more economical. The breakages and damages en route may be more if you do the packing yourself. Moving companies provide special packing materials, and trained personnel do a professional job. They use air-ride suspension vehicles and effective protective wrapping for the safe transport of goods.

There are a large number of moving companies listed in the Yellow Pages and the Internet. Most of them will give you a quotation by telephone or online. Comparing them will give an idea of the market rate. Visit a few of them to see their facilities. Ask a few of the better ones to send representatives to your residence to inspect the goods and give you a firm quote. The rates depend on weight and distance, but there could be room for bargaining.

It is important to ensure that the mover has licenses from the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), Federal Highway Administration and the Department of Consumer Affairs. You could also check with the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA). Clarify your insurance coverage before committing to a mover. Insurance should be effective from the time

packing starts until the goods are unpacked at the destination. Ask the movers to provide you with a complete inventory of the goods entrusted to them. You should carefully countercheck it.

In case of any damage or loss of goods you can register your complaint with the moving company. If there is a delay in settling any complaints, contact the

NYSDOT. You could also inform the Better Business Bureau or the Department of Consumer Affairs, and AMSA.
